Muhasar means trapped in arabic. There is a reason Talafa left. I decided to name the characters oriental or not too popular names because Muhasar is a land secluded from others.
I sat on my bed. I was scared- no- terrified. The sirens still rang through my bedroom, like a echo. I grabbed a bunch of blankets and dragged them towards my bed. I breathed out, slowly, and I could see my breath. That was all I could see. It was so dark. And it seemed to get darker and darker. I could hear the wind rustling. And my heart beating. I could hear everything. My parents. They were scared. For me and Mia, my sister.
Earlier that day, the alert sirens had been turned on. Then men dressed in black suits walked towards my sister and I. He was holding a small machine in his hand. He walked swiftly and upright. He pushed me down with force and continued walking. I wasn't harmed, but terrified. He continued walking and grabbed a young woman. I called for the city officials standing at the gate. The walked to me and asked, "Is their a disturbance?" I replied,"Yes! Those men are, umm.. being disruptive!" The officials looked at the men, then at me, then at each other. Then they grabbed me by the arm and walked me to their office. They told me I would be staying with them until the curfew. They placed me in a room full of books and nothing else. The books were empty. All they said was, "You will keep this a secret." Then the men took me home.
Now I sat in my cold room. It was freezing. I didn't even have a lamp. I stepped out of bed and walked into the hall. It was just as cold. I put on a coat and ran out the door. I can't do this. I can't do this. It's against the resavs.... I thought. The resavs where all the rules the citizens of Muhasar had to obey.
CHAPTER 2
I walked out of my house and felt the soft sand under my feet. It wasn't sticky and stuck to your feet, it was soft and fluffy. We only had two types of weather in Muhasar. The only two that existed. Rain and fair weather. It had not rained in four months.
However, my mind wasn't on the texture of the ground. Or the coolness of the night against my skin. Or the way the moonlight shone down on the single pond in Muhasar. I was more focused on the resavs. In my head, I slowly recited them.
1. Look up to your elders.
2. Never disobey the Hökmdar, Iewschte , or Controladores.
3. Never pass the Wall of Serendipity without official permission.
4. You must accept any punishment at any time.
5. Never leave your settlement after curfew (9:00 P.M.)
All children were required by law to learn these. I remembered my friend Malatama , although we called her Mollie. She couldn't learn the resavs by heart, so the Hökmdar took her for a day. I remember racing with all my might, believing every sprint and step I took was a second more of pain Mollie would endure. I turned corners and ran through markets and schools. I simply ran through the small lake in the middle of town. I dashed into the building where the Hökmdar, Iewschte , and Controladores took their prisoners. I signaled for the teenage woman sitting at a desk managing papers with the custom Muhasar hand signal. A flick of the wrist and snap of the finger.
The woman immediately looked up to reveal her work-tag. Her tag read:
Lilliac Yostwood. Desk Assistant. Probation.
